ACTION FIELD KODRA
Action Field Kodra is a visual arts festival organized since 2001 on an annual basis in Thessaloniki, Greece, by the Municipality of Kalamaria. It aims to introduce to the public young and emerging artists as well as experimental artistic practices. Even though it maintains strong ties with the local art scene and community, AFK during recent years has sought to enhance its international scope. Its main venue is located in the former military camp Kodra, a beautiful location by the sea, surrounded by verdant open air space. The location itself carries a heavily charged historical background; a place which saves prehistoric traces of human inhabitation but also important findings from the archaic and the roman period. It is a site of archaeological interest and ongoing excavations, as well as one of the largest military camps during World War I, and also a place of temporary settlement for refugees during the Asia Minor Catastrophe (1922) and the subsequent population exchange between Greece and Turkey. AFK is considered to be one of the biggest art events in Greece, and most of the country’s distinguished curators and artists have participated in some of its editions. It is particularly known for granting space to young artists, inviting some of them to professionally present for the very first time their work to curators, collectors, gallery owners and the public.
CTM Festival – Festival For Adventurous Music And Art is a prominent international festival dedicated to contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music, as well as the diverse range of artistic activities in the context of sound and club cultures. Since 1999 it takes place concurrently and cooperatively with the transmediale – international festival for art and digital culture, Berlin. CTM’s aim is to present the most outstanding international productions in adventurous music and audio-visual performance, as well as to reflect recent artistic, social and technical developments in music culture in panels, screenings and presentations. CTM Festival is an independent project and organized by DISK Berlin. Next to the annual festival DISK and the affiliated DISK Agency produce and curate events and projects during the year, both in Berlin and abroad. DISK is a founding member of the ICAS – International Cities of Advanced Sound network.
Electropixel Festival is a digital art festival centered around experimental, transversal and emergent practices, as well as the relationship between avant-garde coding and art. Electropixel is aimed at becoming an international festival that offers a space of exchange, experimentation and development for programmers, inventors of all stripes, and artists (audio, visual, music, art, interactive) using new technologies in their creations. Electropixel wants to engage in an open dialogue with the Nantes contemporary arts and artists’ community through this festival and to reflect the diversity of these critical practices locally, nationally and internationally. Electropixel Festival works in continuity with the Pixelache network and promotes artistic projects situated at the cutting edge of these creative fields to ultimately raise awareness of emerging practices and artists often defined as “underground.” Electropixel is a three day festival, organised by the Association APO33, offering the public the opportunity to discover many digital, electronic and sound art projects in Nantes. This festival is also a way to expose the best Nantes-based artists currently working in this arena to a European and international network and audiences.
CITY OF WOMEN
The International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women was established in 1995 in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It takes place annually at the beginning of October. In it’s 21 editions, the City of Women has welcomed over seven hundred artists, collectives, groups, curators, theorists and activists from all over the world, ranging from the emergent to the pre-eminent. It is open to all artistic disciplines, encompassing theatre, music, dance, visual arts, performing arts, multimedia and transdisciplinary arts. It also features lectures, workshops, discussions, book promotion events, etc. Each year the festival has a central theme. In the 90s, these themes included stereotypes, storytelling, and violence. Among the later themes were non-western authors, transition, (un)safety, history and memory, humour, the global south, ageing, etc.
The name Pixelache was originally found in the early 2000s in a Finnish article that predicted new words which we would need in the future. The word ‘pikseliähky’ (translated into English as “pixelache”) was supposed to describe the feeling that results from an overdose of digital media content. This overdose can happen easily if the content is too monotonous – which is the case if standards, formats, tools and design principles converge to a narrow set of options. Later interpretations focused more on the ‘ache’ of digital influence in everyday life, and an ‘ache’ to re-engage with non-digital interfaces and systems. Pixelache seeks to challenge mainstream standards and conventions, not only related to media and technology, but of contemporary society in general. Pixelache has been regularly presented as being involved with experimental interaction and electronics, code-based art and culture, grassroot organising & networks, renewable energy production/use, participatory art, open-source cultures, bioarts and art-science culture, alternative economy cultures, politics and economics of media/technology, audiovisual culture, media literacy & ecology and engaging environmental issues.
The HTMlles: Feminist Festival of Media Arts + Digital Culture is a feminist media arts festival which brings together local and international artists, scholars, and activists who are passionate about critical engagement with new technologies from a feminist perspective. Based on a specific theme, each edition explores urgent socio-political questions through a series of exhibitions, conferences, performances and workshops.. The HTMlles is produced by Studio XX, a bilingual, feminist artist-run centre for technological exploration, creation, and critique. Initiated in 1997, the festival began as an international platform for introducing women’s web art. Collaborating closely with partner organizations, The HTMlles has become a multi-site festival dedicated to the presentation of women’s, trans, and gender non-conforming artists’ independent media artworks in a transdisciplinary environment that strives for anti-oppression.
VIVA! ART ACTION
VIVA! Art Action Montréal’s mandate is to oversee the production of events committed to celebrating the diversity and facilitating the development of action art practices. VIVA! presents and promotes performance art (and other related practices) amongst various publics, and gathers professional artists to skill-share, network and reinvigorate their work. VIVA! actively supports collaboration and exchanges on a local, national and international scale.
